The Herald Of Spring

March 15, 2010

I heard a familiar sound from the windows of Pie Palace yesterday, telling me it was going to get warmer and that Spring was finally here. This sound was the herald that shoved Winter back into the dark hole where it belongs. What do you think that sound was? Birdsong? Squealing children? Cars with the top down playing loud music? None of these, dear reader, it was this:

An Ice cream van on the streets of East London

The sound of Spring in this sprawling Metropolis is Mr Whippy, my friends, and what a sound it makes. Greensleeves is played out from the Ice Cream Van with that strangely out of tune tinkle that fills the air and pulls out children from every crevice like the Pied Piper. It’s a most glorious sound, ladies and gentlemen. I feel warmer just listening to it. There’s nothing quite like it.

Mine’s a 99, guv.

  1. If we heard the sound of an ice-cream van where I live, we would think he had lost his marbles. The only indication of spring I will accept is a bird singing I’m not easily fooled Lol.

    • Damn you, Groovychick. You’re too clever by half!
