Possibly The Best Old Spice Advert – EverMarch 31, 2010
Do you remember the Old Spice Adverts? My time was the 70s, so they looked like this:
We now have a version for 2010. Apparently it’s been around for a few weeks, but I haven’t seen it on British TV so I’ve been slow on the uptake. I found it on Facebook this morning though and laughed out loud. I’ve watched it at least five times since and it still makes me laugh. For the few of you who haven’t yet seen it, let me present to you…
I love the speed of the advert, the over the top portrayal of what it is to be a man, the delivery style of the actor, doing it all without missing a beat and the final line is a killer because you don’t expect it. What is there not to like? You’d think it would take a lot of CGI trickery to get it to look that way, but you’d be wrong. Very wrong. The CGI was minimal. Here’s how they did it.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it was good old-fashioned set building and other manual devices, plus the pitching of the idea, the writing of the script and the brilliance of the actor, who had to be able to hold your attention and make you believe the unbelievable.
What’s unbelievable to me is that it would smell any better than it did in the 70s. It was truly awful. Fair play to them, though. They’ve commissioned a great ad and it almost makes me want to go and check it out. Almost.
