Michael Jackson – One Year On

June 25, 2010

It’s a year today since I received two texts late in the evening alerting me to the unbelievable, and then found myself watching the drama that was the death of Michael Jackson unfolding on TV. In the year since he died there have been accusations of murder, paternity questions and the stratospheric sales of his music and related merchandise (1 billion and rising), making him a member of that club where artists are even more profitable now they’re in the earth than when they were on it. Still, his music and legacy will almost certainly outlive the madness surrounding his family and ultimately the family themselves.

As a tribute, I’ve uploaded a video from YouTube. Instead of going for the usual Billie Jean/Thriller/Moonwalking videos, I’ve chosen this one where he’s dancing with the Nicholas Brothers, possibly the best tap dancers in the world. It comes from The Jacksons Show in 1973, and although the rest of the family joins in, including a very young Janet Jackson, Michael absolutely storms it. There’s a reason why he became the biggest name in that family.

  1. May he rest in peace.

  2. He certainly had something. Shame it all went wrong.

    • Shame indeed. To be honest with you, I didn’t think he’d make it to 40 as his life was becoming more and more bizarre.

      • Bizarre is one way to describe it. Wonder if there will be a film of his life and who will play him?
