Pancake day – Waitrose style

March 8, 2011

Shrove Tuesday, also known as pancake day is nearly here. It’s the day of feasting before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent where you fast and pray until Easter. Here in Blighty, we have pancakes the traditional way with sugar and lemon juice. There are other ways of having pancakes of course, but Waitrose wins the prize for me in the luxury pancake stakes. This is what I saw as a display when I went there last Friday:

There’s pancake mix and lemon, but look at the other stuff: Grand Marnier; Cointreau; Maple syrup and vanilla sugar. Vanilla sugar! I’m not a super foodie, so I risk showing my ignorance here, but I’ve never heard of it. Sounds nice though.

Then there’s a special lemon squeezing gadget thingy that catches the pips as you push out that juice. What a clever little thing.

Yes, you can count on Waitrose to go the extra mile when it comes to pancakes. I’ll have mine with Cointreau, thanks.

  1. I’m curious about sugar and lemon juice, never heard of it. just a few drops over the ‘cakes?

We get maple syrup, maple syrup, maple syrup…

    • Maple syrup? You are a Waitrose customer just waiting to be served!

We make our (thin) pancakes and squeeze lemon on them, not forgetting to top them with sugar. It’s a simple, but delicious dish.

  2. Pancake mix? Just add an egg and milk?
    It’s a bag of flour, isn’t it?
