About Pie and Biscuits

Why Pie and biscuits?

This is a question I’m often asked regarding the title of this blog. Well, the British like a pie, and biscuits go well with a nice cup of tea. There’s also a rhythm to the title that when you read, or say it, is the same as the sentence stuff and nonsense. I give due gravitas to serious events, when I choose to write about them, but in the main, I find the absurd in life, news stories and the world of entertainment (fish, barrel, shooting, no?). Random tales of living as a born and bred Londoner in this great (and sometimes infuriating) Metropolis are dropped into the mix.

I didn’t know if anyone would enjoy my tomfoolery beyond the confines of friends and family, who, like woodpeckers drilling at a tree, persisted in their persuasion to start this blog. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the response. Dear reader… I’m a writer!

If you keep coming and commenting, I’ll keep writing. If you don’t come and comment, I’ll keep writing anyway. Because that’s the kind of Pie I am.

The world is full of stuff and nonsense. This Londoner is trying to make sense of it. One day at a time.

  3. Hi Pie

Good stuff, and thanks for leaving comments on my site – most people never comment so it’s good to get some feedback.

    • You’re welcome.

You may get a good readership, but few comments and I’m not sure why that is. Some people are just very shy I suppose. Me? I like to comment. I feel more like a participant than just a reader and I would hope people feel the same and have a chat on my blog. Isn’t that what the internet is about?

  4. Wanted to drop by and say hi and hoping the pie is full of …cherries? I’m going to scroll around now and see what you are up to here. 🙂

ps: I wrote you back on the thread but I’m not sure you got it before it was deleted. Thanks.

    • Hello, Gigi. Thanks for popping in. Whether what I have here will be to your taste or not, I know we’ll be seeing each other on the forums, whether our comments on the threads remain, or not.

  5. Great Site! I love it. Your attempt to accentuate the positive in a fun manner is entertaining.
I will keep coming back to hear what happens next….
    Ziek

    • Hello Ziek.

I’m glad you’re enjoying my blog. It would be great to see you again and respond to your future comments.

  6. Mate, I stumbled across this two days ago and I have been as hooked as a glaswegian on deep-fried heroin, really admire what your doing here and jealous of how you have done it. If its possible could you let me know any advice on how to launch a successful blog for I am hoping to do my own.

Thanks and keep up the good work,

    Jango

    • Hey, Jango, thanks for stumbling on my blog and I’m glad you liked it.

If you’re hoping to do your own blog, I would say just start. Sign up to WordPress and set up the blog when you’re ready to do so. Decide what you want to talk about and get to it. I knew I was going to be fairly random in my subjects so that’s the way I chose to do it. You may have something specific in mind like technology, music, film, fashion, politics so write about that.

Read other blogs and make comments to build an audience, but don’t do it to just any old blog to get numbers. I make comments on a lots of blogs that interest me and then I whittle it down to a smaller number that I comment on most regularly as I like their content. You give to get in this game and genuine givers get nice audiences in time. That’s the other thing. There are millions of blogs out there, so it takes time to get a consistent readership. Some people get an audience quite quickly, but for most people it takes longer. It’s better to have a smaller audience who give meaningful comments you can respond to than a big transient audience who will have a quick look, but not say anything, or go “Nice blog, now visit mine.” Those kind of comments get short shrift from me.

Oh, one more thing, the WordPress forum is a mine of information about blogging issues. There’s a showcase section where you can let people know about your blog and any new postings (I would suggest a months worth of postings before you do that, as I think you need to give people enough to look at). I didn’t know about it until I had been blogging nearly six months and I wish I knew about it earlier.

Good luck with it, Jango and come again to make comments whenever you fancy. Thanks once again for visiting my blog. Spread the word, baby!

  7. I see now where I’ve been going wrong! Thanks for the tips 🙂

    • You don’t need much help, do you? I’ve seen your stats, mate, and you featured on the WordPress homepage just a couple of weeks ago. I can only dream of that publicity!

      • The thing is I think I fit into the ‘big transient audience’. With very few comments, for all I know I could have a readership akin to 8-Track Stereo Monthly (I must cancel that subscription!)

I actually didn’t know about WordPress forum, so taking a look last night I discovered that I was eligible to sell my soul down the river and add Adsense adverts to the blog. Not that I like doing this but if it makes a few pennies I could certainly do with the money.

Having clicked on all the relevent buttons the first ad to appear was for Madamme Tussauds, which was somewhat ironic seeing as I recently slagged it off!

        • Oh, the irony!

I’d better trawl your archive to see that Madame Tussauds post. I may had read it, but it would be worth looking at again. Personally, I won’t go down the Adsense route. I don’t understand it, I’m not interested and I just want to write and get my thoughts out there, rather than put pressure on myself to get maximum clicks for 0.000002p. If you think it’ll work for you, though, there’s nothing wrong in giving it a go. I’ll keep reading your blog and help you make your fortune 😉

  8. Perhaps I should donate my one penny a week to charity.

  9. Hi Pie! I’m your new fan – keep up the good work 🙂

    • Hey, Hawkeye. Thanks for popping in. Just have a little root around whenever you’re bored at work, or something.

  10. Hey pienbiscuits,

I was wondering if you could do a post about food in London. I am a huge fan of English food you see. Eel pies in particular and the Full English Breakfast in general.

    • I like the sound of that, Mallcop. That could be a goer. The food range may be fairly small as I don’t eat red meat (though I go for chicken and fish with gusto), but where I fall short on that knowledge, I will enlist the help of my friends.

  11. Dear pienbiscuits,

May I know how you managed to get a sub-header on your blog? The one that reads ‘The good, the bad, the ugly and the downright ridiculous’

I want to add a witty sub-header to Mall Cop Diary too, but I haven’t been able to find the option on the menu that allows me to do so. Please advise.

    • Mallcop, I don’t know why you keep ending up in the moderating pen. I have to release some of my other readers too and I find it annoying. I may have to send an email to WP support to find out what’s going on. Unless you changed your email address recently.

Now, on to your original question. I created that header in Photoshop. It’s one big fat JPEG. I don’t think the theme you currently have supports changeable headers. If you want to Create something like that for your blog, you may need to find a new theme that allows you to change the header, then make sure you have the right size for it. I would also suggest you go to the WP support forum as they may know something about creating a sub head for that theme that I don’t. Hope that helps.

      • Thanks!

As a matter of fact, I did change my email address recently before I posted here. So maybe that’s why I ended up in the moderating pen.

  12. When are we going to get a sample of your artworks, dear Graphic Designer?

    • Some of the oddball photoshop montage images you may see on this blog have been created by me. The pie with the candle in it on this post is a case in point. The picture of the rubber duck with the speedo swim armbands in my post about my swimming lessons was also my handiwork.

  13. Thanks for visiting my blog. Curious, why Pie and Biscuits?

    • And thanks for visiting mine.

Why Pie and Biscuits? Well it sounded nonsensical and British. Most Brits like a pie and they definitely like a biscuit with their tea. If you say it out loud it has the same sound and rhythm as the words ‘stuff and nonsense’, which perfectly describes some of the things I write about here.

If you enjoyed what you’ve read so far, you are more than welcome to return and comment. I look forward to it.

      • The more I thought about it I thought maybe it was like having conversation over Pie and Biscuits. But it is clever and I like what you have to write. I have a new post called Ketchup and Pickles But Hold the Technical Please. Kind of quirky but thought it might draw interest. I am starting a new Blog called Watching for God. Not all about God but needed a place to share my random thoughts. And there is a little story as to why the Blog Title. Haven’t written the first one yet. Hope to this weekend.

  14. I love your site 🙂 Please could you look at my posts as I am aspiring to become a journalist and would really appreciate others opinions. – Thank you 🙂

    • I finally got around to having a look at your blog and left a message on your site. I hope it will be of some help. Good luck.

  15. Very nice looking site you have here Pie. Similar style and ethos to mine I think. I love it that someone called to55er has left comments on your site! That mirrors the comments I have from happysluts on my site.

    • Hey, Stewie. How nice of you to come and have a peek at my blog. I think I connected to your style when I had a look at your blog yesterday. I’d better have a look at happysluts too. I may like it. Come again and make comments whenever you fancy it. I’d be happy to see you.

  16. Nice to meet you…kudos on another cool blogger on the web. 🙂 yea…
    Richardo

  17. Cool blog, I love the title too! Thanks so much for the kind words you posted on mine, that was so very encouraging since I am new to the world of blogging. I just wanted to let you know how much it meant to me, especially coming from such a seasoned, well-followed blogger like yourself! 🙂

    • That’s very kind. Thank you very much. You may be a newbie blogger, but I hope you will be blogging for many years to come. Time goes much quicker than you think. And you never stop learning.

  18. Hey there, you seem to be a very creative person and your blog is very interesting and easy to manuever 🙂

    • Thank you. I chose a fairly simple theme with a changeable header and I do my best to not overwhelm with lots of widgets.

I haven’t had a chance to really have a good root around your blog yet, though it’s bookmarked for future reading. I took to your style from the few posts I managed to read and I hope you come back occasionally to read a post and make a comment. It will be most welcome.

  19. Hope things are running smoothly for you today. 🙂

  20. More so than a few hours ago, thanks. Things can only get better!

  21. Hello,

We met at the protest outside BBC Broadcasting House on Friday 28th October and I was just listening to BBC Radio 4 FeedBack (repeated 8pm Sunday 6 Nov), and thought I’d let you know that they broadcast a small clip of your interview. Well Done!

Nice to have met you, and may see you on another BBC protest.

    Bev

    • Hi, Bev.

It was great meeting you too. I haven’t written about the protest yet (though the photos were processed two weeks ago), but I aim to do so next week.

I’ve had to take out a couple of things in your comment as they would’ve identified me. Everyone calls me Pie here and no one knows what I look like. I hope you understand. If you want to comment on any other things in future, you’d be more than welcome. Here’s to the next protest meeting!

  22. Just came across your blog, now following! Looking forward to reading more, keep it up!

    • Thanks.

I’m intrigued by your blog title. I’ll go and have a look.
